Miniature Vise for Supporting Laser Diode Bars

      Disclosed is a fixture for supporting laser diode bars during
the mirror facet coating procedure.  The fixture is designed to
present multiple laser bars in such a manner that they may be
uniformly coated without damage due to thermal stress during the
coating process.

      Vise jaw 1 is opened by the use of the screw 2. Cleaved laser
diode bars measuring approximately 0.750 x 0.150 x 13.5 mm with the
facets facing upward are loaded in position 3.  The bars are then
secured for the coating procedure by tightening the screw 2.  In
order to maintain constant tension on the bars and to avoid excessive
force during thermal cycling, a spring 4 is incorporated into the jaw
mechanism.

      Significant aspects of this design are its small size achieved
by use of a dove tail vise jaw guide 5; embedded spring to maintain
constant tension through thermal cycling; adjustable shutters 6, to
allow mirror coating of both facets without reloading the laser bars;
and flexibility of design to be used with a variety of coating
processes (Example:  electron beam evaporation, ion beam sputtering,
and plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition.)
