Methodology for Modifying Retentive Time Based Acknowledgement Objects

      A methodology is described which allows an originator to
reassociate a time parameter to a retention characteristic of a
previous distribution.

      A previous article describes a method for allowing an
originator to associate a date/time parameter to retain an object by
the mail services. This article describes a technique for permitting
the originator to change the associated date/time for the original
object without having to resend the distribution with a different
time parameter. An originator may wish to associate a different time
to a particular Retentive Time Based Acknowledgement Object. For
example, the project may have been suspended or a document is no
longer confidential and can be printed before the original time
assigned to the Retentive Time Based Acknowledgement Object. A Modify
Association Parameter object can be distributed through the network
to the recipient. This object contains the new date/time and the
associated operation. Upon receipt of the object, the specified
ACTION DUE DATE or REPLY BY DATE, would be modified according to the
new date/time.  The receiving server would verify that a Retentive
Time Based Acknowledgement Object existed for the request. Upon
meeting the criteria, the date/time parameter for the Retentive Time
Based Acknowledgement Object would be modified with the new date/time
parameter.
