Abstract

Information is provided in an interchange data stream that describes the contents of particular parts of the data stream in a concise, easy-to-process representation. In particular, this invention provides a means of identifying a segment of information as being relevant as a summary of the total information, or an alternate representation of the total information.

Primary Information for Interchange Data Streams

Information is provided in an interchange data stream
that describes the contents of particular parts of the data stream in
a concise, easy-to-process representation. In particular, this
invention provides a means of identifying a segment of information as
being relevant as a summary of the total information, or an alternate
representation of the total information.

In a computer system, it is required to share information
between and among processes and applications. This sharing is most
efficiently accomplished if all processes or applications subscribe
to a common data format for the information being shared.  The data
stream description is called an Interchange Data Stream.

In general, an Interchange Data Stream consists of one or more
separate parts, called data stream objects.  Each of these objects is
of a specific type.  Various types of objects have been defined,
including text, image, graphics, audio and video.

This invention defines information, called Primary Information,
that can be associated with each data object and included in the
Interchange Data Stream. The Primary Information can be any data type
and need not be of the same type as the object in which it is
associated. Normally, the Primary Information would be a succinct,
concise description, or other form of summary of the information
contained in the object with which it is associated.

The primary information could be used if there is an occasion
when the receiving application can not perform the proper action on
