Method for Camber Determination On Rolls of Thin Film

      A method is described for camber determination and
measurements on a flexible thin film product in a roll format.

      Control of the film is accomplished by utilizing an equipment
system consisting of a roll handler unit and a measuring machine.
The roll handler unit consists of an unwinder and a rewinder which
straddles the measuring machine such that it controls the tension and
position of the roll material to be measured (see Fig. 1).

      The measuring machine consists of a tool having an automated
coordinate measuring system and a base fixture with a vacuum plate to
maintain the roll material in a flat condition.  The vacuum table
should be of a size to accommodate the width of the material at a
minimum length of 18".  The microscope lens of the measuring tool
moves above the stationary product via a 3-dimensional cartesian arm.
The product can be measured without any mechanical deformation.

      The positioning of the roll material on the vacuum plate is
optimized by the use of the roll handler tension control and
edge-guiding features.  The material, while being held down flat,
void of any wrinkles, is measured along one of the outside edges for
a length of 18".  The first and last points (0" and 18") are used as
a datum.  The difference in the "Y" direction is taken from the
midpoint and compared to this datum which is recorded as the maximum
camber for the 18" section.
