Crown Lap Machine

Disclosed is a controllable method to produce either a
positive or negative crown on read/write sliders.

Fig. 1 shows the lapping table being prepared with a CONCAVE
surface using the Intregal Grind apparatus.  The grind apparatus
consists of a grinding drum and drive motor (not shown) that is moved
horizontally in a direction 90 degrees from that of the lapping
table.  It is also moved in the "Z" (Vertical) direction by the use
of air cylinders (not shown).  Fig. 1 also shows the motion of the
LAP TABLE. It shows the WAY RODS on which the lap table rides via the
bearings and the method used to BOW the WAY RODS to produce the
correct radius to the lap table.

Fig. 2 shows the Intregal Grind Apparatus REPLACED with the
TOOL HOLDER and Sliders.  By introducing LAPPING SLURRY (abrasive in
solution) and controlling the "Z" movement (downward pressure) and
moving both the tool holder and the lapping plate at right angles to
one another at controlled speeds, a very highly controllable, precise
lapping process takes place to produce the desired crown.
