Abstract

An ergonomic manual screw starter is used in the assembly of 3.5 inch hard files. The screw starter is used to pick up and to start the first few threads of the screws to prevent binding and crossthreading. There are several ergonomic principles designed into this screw starter, plus the materials used to construct it were chosen to be compatible with a class 100 clean room environment. The starter was also designed for long service life and ease of use.

Ergonomic Clean Room Manual Screw Starter

An ergonomic manual screw starter is used in the assembly
of 3.5 inch hard files.  The screw starter is used to pick up and to
start the first few threads of the screws to prevent binding and
crossthreading.  There are several ergonomic principles designed into
this screw starter, plus the materials used to construct it were
chosen to be compatible with a class 100 clean room environment.  The
starter was also designed for long service life and ease of use.

The ergonomic clean room manual screw starter is shown in the
figure.  The design focuses on the following parameters.

Ergonomics:  The length was chosen to be comfortable and easy
to maneuver.  The flat circular surface near the pick-up end was
designed to conform to the fingers and to provide a bearing surface
to reduce grip strength while threading the screw.  The elastic
O-ring at the tip securely holds the screw while reducing insertion
force.  This eliminates screws falling out of the starter which cause
the operator to have to pick up more than one screw to complete the
operation.

Clean Room Compatibility:  The starter is made from DELRIN* and
an elastomer O-ring.  Both of these materials are clean room
compatible.  There are no moving parts to cause particulate
contamination.  There are also no metallic parts to generate metal
chips or shavings as is common with the metallic spring-loaded screw
starters.
