Proposal for the Topology and Wiring of the Green Vulcan

      Disclosed is the topology and wiring for a multi-stage
network which can be used in the Green Vulcan, which is a distributed
memory parallel computer.

      Distributed memory parallel computers require an
interconnection network for the communication of data between
processors.  Multi-stage interconnection networks consist of
successive stages of switches.  By connecting the switches in the
form of two back-to-back Omega networks, a Benes network with
excellent routing properties is obtained. The wiring of this Benes
network is made regular by mapping logical switches to physical
locations according to a bitwise Exclusive OR operator.  The
resulting topology is shown to have desirable properties in terms of
ease of wiring, scalability, bandwidth, and fault tolerance.  In
addition, an efficient routing algorithm for the fault-free network
is obtained.
