Actuator Controlled by Ultrasonic Motor

      Disclosed is a device for controlling the actuator of a
Hard Disk Drive using an ultrasonic motor. This device can also be
used for controlling an optical head in optical recording.

      There are two kinds of devices.  One of these is a linear
actuator which is controlled by surface waves.  Fig. 1 schematically
shows a Hard Disk Drive which has a linear actuator. Item 1 denotes a
magnetic disk put on a spindle motor 5.  Item 2 denotes a magnetic
head. Item 3 denotes an actuator which is controlled by an ultrasonic
motor 4. Fig. 2 (1) shows the ultrasonic motor 4 in detail, with a
piezo-electric oscillator 6 and an oscillator 7.

      Fig. 3(a) is a top view and Fig. 3(b) is a side view of
the rotary actuator which is controlled by vibration tips. Item 8
denotes a pivot (center of rotation), and Item 9 denotes vibration
tips. Fig. 4 (2) shows one of the vibration tips in detail, with a
piezo-electric oscillator 10 and a vibration tip 11.

      Fig. 5(a) shows a side view and Fig. 5(b) shows a top view of
a rotary actuator using surface waves.  Item 12 denotes a
transfer-block which has a surface wave layer in the contact area 13.
The ultrasonic motor 14 is like that shown in Fig. 2.

      Besides the above example, there are many kinds of actuators
with different structures.

      The use of an ultrasonic motor has a number of advantages:
