Abstract

A methodology is described which allows a person distributing a document to specify a non-returnable option with the document. This facilitates preventing unnecessary network traffic and eliminates unnecessary copies of documents from being unsolicitly bounced back through a network to the originator. It further prevents returning of a distribution which the originator wants to ensure is the final word on a matter.

Non-returnable Distributions

A methodology is described which allows a person distributing a
document to specify a non-returnable option with the document.  This
facilitates preventing unnecessary network traffic and eliminates
unnecessary copies of documents from being unsolicitly bounced back
through a network to the originator. It further prevents returning of
a distribution which the originator wants to ensure is the final word
on a matter.

The present article describes an option or attribute which
accompanies a distributed object and indicates to the receiving
system that the sender is not to receive replies, attaches or
forwards of the original document. The present disclosure can be
further embodied as segmenting portions of a document which should
not be returned (i.e., removed before sending to the originator via a
reply, attach, forward, etc.). The receiving system will ensure that
any outgoing distributions containing the non-returnable marking will
not be sent to the original sender.  Any system attempting to perform
a 'returnable' send back to the originator can use an End User
Interface (EUI) method to notify the sending party that the document
is non-returnable for a specific set of recipients.

Thus, the document is marked as non-returnable and the
receiving system implements enforcing non-returnable documents.
Also, notification that the document is non-returnable for a set of
recipients in a recipient list can be implemente...
