Abstract

Disclosed is a mechanism to prevent scatter of a ferro fluid seal material of shaft fixed spindle motor by magnetic flux for trapping the scattered ferro fluid material. The mechanism is widely applicable to all shaft fixed type hard disk drives. This makes less contamination and keeps stable performance of the ferro fluid seal for a long time.

Protect Mechanism for Ferro Fluid Seal

      Disclosed is a mechanism to prevent scatter of a ferro
fluid seal material of shaft fixed spindle motor by magnetic flux for
trapping the scattered ferro fluid material. The mechanism is widely
applicable to all shaft fixed type hard disk drives.  This makes less
contamination and keeps stable performance of the ferro fluid seal
for a long time.

      A prior sealing mechanism for a fixed shaft 1 of the spindle
motor includes ferro fluid seals 2, a lower pole piece 3, an upper
pole piece 4, a ferrite magnet 5 and ball bearings 6, as shown in a
figure.

      During the rotation of the motor, the ferro fluid material of
the seal 2 tends to scatter into a magnetic recording disk (not
shown) attached to the structure.  To prevent the scatter of the
material, a magnet 7 and a yoke 8 are provided to form a magnetic
flux path to trap the scattered material onto the yoke 8.
