Abstract

Disclosed is a method for changing spindle motor rotational speed by using the eject button. Increase in CD-ROM disk rotation speed provides higher data transfer rate but also increases the vibration and acoustic noise level. Since maximum performance is not always necessary for all Personal Computer users, a choice of maximum performance and comfort should be provided. The described method provides easier user interface compared to the use of host command since a utility program is not required. Without a utility program, there are advantages such as no dependency on Operation System, no dependency on version upgrades, and no overhead load on both system and the user when changing the rotational speed.

Using Eject Button

      Disclosed is a method for changing spindle motor rotational
speed by using the eject button.  Increase in CD-ROM disk rotation
speed provides higher data transfer rate but also increases the
vibration and acoustic noise level.  Since maximum performance is not
always necessary for all Personal Computer users, a choice of maximum
performance and comfort should be provided.  The described method
provides easier user interface compared to the use of host command

      The flowchart in the Figure illustrates the method in
accordance with this invention.  This method is also applicable to
another removable media storage device such as DVD-ROM.
