Abstract

For performance benchmark, we could never get a dedicated Host. Also, to understand the effective capacity of the SNA Gateway, multiple mainframes could not be obtained. Without this tool, it is not possible to come up with the performance and capacity numbers of Communications Server/2 SNA Gateway.

Spoofing of Systems Network Architecture Gateway as a Host Simulator

For performance benchmark, we could never get a dedicated Host.
Also, to understand the effective capacity of the SNA Gateway,
multiple mainframes could not be obtained.  Without this tool, it is
not possible to come up with the performance and capacity numbers of
Communications Server/2 SNA Gateway.

Host Simulator provides the solution to measure the capacity
and performance of our SNA gateways without having multiple dedicated
mainframes.  It also allows measuring of the performance and capacity
of our competitor SNA gateways.  Communications Server has the
following test tools based on the SNA gateway code:
o  Host simulator to performance test gateways or workstations
without tying up real host resources.  This function was
implemented in April 1995 and is continued for Communications
      Server performance testing.
o  Host simulator to performance test DLUR gateways or
workstations without tying up real host resources.  This
would simulate the DLuS host function through our gateway
      code.

This invention presents a way of easily providing expanded functions
to users while keeping the base code structure.

The host simulation functions use the base code with compile
options to add a little extra code to set the simulation mode.  In
this simulated environment, data which can be echoed to the real SNA...
