Abstract

This article describes a method for retention of SMT (Surface Mount Technology) connector on PCB (Printed Circuit Board) Most card edge, high profile and un-symmetrical connectors have a pair of pegs and location pins. The pegs retain a connector body to prevent fall down and solder lead floating during a soldering process, also these reinforce the joints between a connector and PCB against the mechanical stress. These location pins make the connector lead/body fix on the right position of PCB. Therefore, four PTH holes are required for these pegs and location pins with current connectors. Location Peg for SMT Connector

      This article describes a method for retention of SMT (Surface
Mount Technology) connector on PCB (Printed Circuit Board) Most card
edge, high profile and un-symmetrical connectors have a pair of pegs
and location pins.  The pegs retain a connector body to prevent fall
down and solder lead floating during a soldering process, also these
reinforce the joints between a connector and PCB against the
mechanical stress.  These location pins make the connector lead/body
fix on the right position of PCB.  Therefore, four PTH holes are
required for these  pegs and location pins with current connectors.

    This method can eliminate two holes and shrink a connector length
due to using the location pegs.  These location pegs made from solder
plated metal have four fins and those are stuck into plated holes
when a connector is mounted on PCB.  These pegs fix a connector on
the right  position and retain a connector body on PCB.  Those pegs
also reinforce  the joints between a connector and PCB by soldering
instead of the current pegs.  (Refer to Fig. 2 Location Peg)
