Abstract

The Key Idea The key idea of the invention is a tuner based on GPS (Global Positioning System) data received from GPS satellites and used to determine location. The tuner selects different channels based on the location of the receiver and the tuner. An important application of this receiver is in the area of intelligent transportation where this type of receivers can be used for in-vehicle signage and localized information. As travelers or vehicles equipped with this receiver travel, they automatically receive important local information and display it digitally or graphically. Hence, information is provided to mobile users based on their location.

   The Key Idea

   The key idea of the invention is a tuner based on GPS
(Global Positioning System) data received from GPS satellites and
used to determine location.  The tuner selects different channels
based on the location of the receiver and the tuner.  An important
application of this receiver is in the area of intelligent
transportation where this type of receivers can be used for
in-vehicle signage and localized information.  As travelers or
vehicles equipped with this receiver travel, they automatically
receive important local information and display it digitally or
graphically.  Hence, information is provided to mobile users based on
their location.

   The Invention

   The invention described here is a tuner system that
performs the following functions:
  o  Accept GPS location data from a GPS receiver.
  o  Accept a set of channel allocations from an RF receiver.
  o  Compare and select a channel that is associated with the GPS
     location data.
  o  Pass the said data to the RF receiver so that the said
     receiver is tuned to the right channel for the localized
     information.

   The Claim

   An intelligent GPS-based tuner system consisting of:
  o  A GPS receiver interface, to receive location information.
  o  A means of receiving channel allocation information for
     different locations.
  o  A logic that compares the GPS data and the channel
     assignments and determines the channel that provides the
     local information.
  o  A means of tuning to said selected channel.
