Bookmark Maintenance Tool

   This publication describes a method for managing links in
users' bookmark files in browsers.

   The idea behind the bookmark maintenance tool is
that is provides a way of managing links in users' bookmarks file.
Currently there exists tools that help users manage their bookmarks
by helping them group links logically, but to our knowledge, there
are no tools that actually follow links in a bookmark list and notify
a user when a a link goes bad.

   This disclosure solves the problem of identifying bad links
in an automated way with options that are customizable by the user.
The system can run a background check on links in the bookmark list
(at times that are specified by the user) and then notify the user of
potential bad links and provide options for handling those links.

   The process is:
  o  The user sets the bookmark maintenance profile telling the
     system when to check links and how to manage them.
  o  At the specified times the system pings the TCPIP address
     associated with each link in the bookmark list and maintains
     a list of links that are pinged unsuccessfully.
  o  The system rechecks the links at prescribed times to make
     sure the server wasn't temporarily down when the link was
     checked.
  o  The system returns a list of potential bad links to the
