Abstract

This article describes a structure of bearing shield used in spindle motor for Hard Disk Drive. A typical spindle motor using the direct bearing doesn't have inner shield (FIG1) so that performance of motor noise and motor current becomes worse at high rotational speed because of grease migration. In the article, following innovation for bearing shield to avoid above failure and/or problem, is considered. 1. To append shield to each of the two inner Rings. (FIG2) 2. To make a narrow air gap between inner shield and outer ring (rotational component) to reduce grease migration. (FIG3)

Inner Ring Attached Bearing Shielding for Motor

This article describes a structure of bearing shield used
in spindle motor for Hard Disk Drive.  A typical spindle motor using
the direct bearing doesn't have inner shield (FIG1) so that
performance of motor noise and motor current becomes worse at high
rotational speed because of grease migration.  In the article,
following innovation for bearing shield to avoid above failure and/or
problem, is considered.
  1.  To append shield to each of the two inner Rings.  (FIG2)
  2.  To make a narrow air gap between inner shield and
outer ring (rotational component) to reduce grease
      migration.  (FIG3)
