Abstract

This invention uses a graphical user interface to facilitate the scheduling of people in different time shifts. It enables messages to be routed to a person filling a specified role at a specified time. The user of the system specifies the content of the information to pass along to the person filling the role. The automated system determines the specific details (email address or pager number) of the person to notify based on a scheduling table. The graphical user interface displays the coverage of time shifts by individual people or by roles. Users of the system can clearly see at a glance if there is appropriate coverage by the right type of people through the different time shifts.

Automate the Notification and Scheduling of Operators

This invention uses a graphical user interface to
facilitate the scheduling of people in different time shifts.  It
enables messages to be routed to a person filling a specified role at
a specified time.  The user of the system specifies the content of
the information to pass along to the person filling the role.  The
automated system determines the specific details (email address or
pager number) of the person to notify based on a scheduling table.
The graphical user interface displays the coverage of time shifts by
individual people or by roles.  Users of the system can clearly see
at a glance if there is appropriate coverage by the right type of
people through the different time shifts.

   Concepts
  o  An Operator Role
An operator role is a specific role to which several
people, (known as the Operator Members) can be
assigned.  At any given time there will be one person
on duty, which could be different people based on the
time of day and day of week.  In a hospital scenario,
an Operator Role could be Cardiologist.  Several doctors
might fit this role, but only one is on call at any
     particular time of day.
When defining an event which will require a response from
someone, the user only needs to know which type of operator
to notify without having to know the exact email or pager
of an individual.  The user would specify which operator to
call, but the system determines who the exact individual is
and what the specific email or pager information is.
o  An Operator Role Schedule Table
An operator role schedule table is defined which contains
scheduling information for the operator roles.  The
supervisor of the operators uses this table to assign
individuals or groups to fill each operator's role during
particular time periods.  Over the course of a week,
different people assume the role of Operator during
     different shifts.
This allows the supervisor to create a schedule that
defines who fills the operator roles at different
times.  At a glance, the supervisor can analyze
individual schedules, schedules for a specific operator,
and a detailed view on a day-to-day basis of the exact
people on call at specific times of the day.

   Details

The administrator of the system maintains the Operator
Role Schedule Tables.  Each entry in the Operator Role Schedule
Table is a pointer to an Operator Member object (the person filling
that role for that particular time period).  The Operator Member
object contains all the unique information about that person.
Changes can be made to the Operator Member information without having
to update any information in the Operator Role Schedule Table.
