Illuminating Icons

One form of display for conveying information to users of
equipment employs a transparency carrying one or more icons
illuminated from behind by a light emitting diode (LED).

In some applications it is desirable to highlight an icon
using a high power LED.  It is difficult to illuminate the area
allocated to the icon adequately without placing the LED a long
distance behind the icon, occupying considerable space.  The problem
may be simply and effectively dealt with by placing a thin diffusing
film close to the LED with a small gap between it and the
transparency carrying the icon, permitting a much more compact
structure.
