JEDEC Tray Loading Apparatus

Disclosed is an apparatus that can be used to load JEDEC
trays with chip carriers or other electronic components with
relative ease using automated or manual methods.

The difficulty encountered while loading these trays is
that the tray pockets the components fit into are only slightly
larger than the components themselves, and due to the tight spacing
of the pockets, there is very little if any lead-in provided to
assist in loading the trays.

The apparatus disclosed uses a funneled shape guide block
that provides a substantial opening in which to load the parts, and
the tapered sides guide the part into the small pocket on the tray.
Refer to Figure 1.  The bottom of the guide has tabs with beveled
surfaces that easily mate with the tray pocket and provide an
accurate alignment of the guide block to the pocket.  In an automated
applications, the guide block may be actuated to raise and lower on
to the tray, and an X-Y indexing system could be used to index the
tray rough align subsequent tray pockets to the guide block.  An
additional mechanism is then allowed to load parts into the tray via
the guide block using a typical pick-and-place device.

Another method that can be employed to ease loading,
particularly in a manual fashion, is depicted in Figure 2.  In this
case an additional standard JEDEC tray can be modified to include
component lead-in on the pocket.  Figure 3 shows how this modified
tray can be nested on top o...
