Abstract

A computer system has a couple of Input/Output (I/O) ports which enables I/O subsystems to be attached on it. By using additional systems like a port replicator, same kind but more than one I/O port may be exist on the system. However the system may have an unavailable I/O port on its hardware because of lacking system resources. For example, a serial port is sometimes disabled for Interrupt Request (IRQ) number confliction. And an external Floppy Disk Drive (FDD) may be disabled because only two FDDs can be co-exist in one system.

Availability Indicator for I/O Port

A computer system has a couple of Input/Output (I/O) ports
which enables I/O subsystems to be attached on it.  By using
additional systems like a port replicator, same kind but more than
one I/O port may be exist on the system.  However the system may
have an unavailable I/O port on its hardware because of lacking
system resources.  For example, a serial port is sometimes disabled
for Interrupt Request (IRQ) number confliction.  And an external
Floppy Disk Drive (FDD) may be disabled because only two FDDs can be
co-exist in one system.

Our method easily acknowledges a user of the system
whether an I/O port is available or not.

The method consists of following; 1.  To attach an
indicator by an I/O port.  The indicator may be a Light Emitting
Diode (LED) or etc..  2.  The system software controls the indicator
to acknowledge whether the I/O port is available or not.

By using the method on a system, a user can easily find
out an available I/O port to see the indicator, even if the system
has same kind but a couple of ports and most of them are not
available.
