An Automated Means to Populate Identical Data into a Relational Database
and Keyed or Binary Files

   Disclosed is a set of programs and procedures which is
used to generate data and load the data into keyed and binary Point
of Sale data files and relational database tables.  The data
contained in the heterogeneous data sources must be identical.

   As a solutions provider, IBM Retail Store Solutions is
often faced with the task of integrating multiple applications.
Retail applications store and utilize data contained in both
relational database management systems and in proprietary keyed and
binary file systems.  The task of integrating and testing
applications requires a method of populating identical data into
relational database tables, unique (non-standard) Point of Sale file
systems, and test tools.

   An example of integrating two applications which require
data from both the Point of Sale system and a relational database is
a Labor Management System.  In such a system, the Point of Sale
system and the relational database management system must each
contain Employee information.  Figure 1 illustrates the data
requirements when integrating applications which run on separate
systems but which require common data.

   In order to generate data, move the data to multiple
systems, and load the data into the Point of Sale file system and
relational tables, a series of programs that run standard operating
system commands, retail operating system commands, communications
utilities, and relational database utilities were written.

   Figure 2, depicts the programs created to automate the
process.

   The following list provide details on each numbered step
in the process outlined in Figure 2.
  1.  DataGen
        DataGen is a program which obtains or generates data
      which is distributed to both the machine containing the
      relational database and the machine running the Point of
      Sale system.  In a test environment, the program generates
      data for both systems.  In a production environment, this
      program converts data from another source into formats
      that are acceptable for entry into the Point of Sale
      system and the relational database management system.
  2.  POSPREP
        The POSPREP program reinitializes the Point of Sale
      file system by removing the keyed and binary files and
      recreating empty files, using utilities available with
      the Point of Sale system.
  3.  POSLOAD
        The POSLOAD program loads the binary data files on
      the Point of Sale system with the data generated by the
      DataGen program, using utilities available with the Point
      of Sale system.
  4.  POSBUILD
