Abstract

Problem Solved By This Invention: SCSI adapters are common devices in personal computers and workstations. SCSI adapters are designed to support both internal devices and external devices through expansion connectors. Typically there are two internal connectors for standard and wide devices plus an external wide connector. The flexibility of the adapters is both an advantage and disadvantage.

Automatic Detection of Invalid SCSI Configuration

   Problem Solved By This Invention:

SCSI adapters are common devices in personal computers
and workstations.  SCSI adapters are designed to support both
internal devices and external devices through expansion connectors.
Typically there are two internal connectors for standard and wide
devices plus an external wide connector.  The flexibility of the
adapters is both an advantage and disadvantage.

Incorrect configuration of cables and SCSI devices can
result in loss of data with no indication of the problem (via error
messages or parity checking), intermittent issues which are extremely
difficult to trouble shoot (corrupt virtual memory from disk
swapping), or even a non-functional unit.  Although many adapters
provide 3-connectors (internal-std, internal-wide, external-wide),
valid configurations only use two of the three.  The unused connector
must be terminated to avoid potential problem due to poor signal
quality issues.  Although adapters provide for automatic termination
of the used connectors, they do not currently check for valid
topology of configuration.

What is need is a method for automatic notification to
the user that an invalid SCSI cable topology exists.

   Description of Invention:

A SCSI adapter has three connectors: Internal Std,
Internal Wide, and External.  The logic block samples each of the
connector to determine if a cable is present.  If there are an
invalid configuration is detected (i.e.: all three connectors have
cables connec...
