Abstract

This article describes an alarm system for a mobile device that has a shock detector to know a user's reaction and can control the alarm sound volume. With this system, mobile devices that can make an alarm, such as portable computer or cellular phone, can receive a signal from a user by detecting vibrations. The system provides a user the way to stop the alarm or reduce the sound volume easily and quickly by tapping the device casing. User does not need to find the switch to control the alarm at a dark place, does not need to open the lid or cover to see the switch inside, does not need to take the device out from a bag.

Alarm Stop System with Shock Detector

   This article describes an alarm system for a mobile device
that has a shock detector to know a user's reaction and can control
the alarm sound volume.  With this system, mobile devices that can
make an alarm, such as portable computer or cellular phone, can
receive a signal from a user by detecting vibrations.  The system
provides a user the way to stop the alarm or reduce the sound volume
easily and quickly by tapping the device casing.  User does not need
to find the switch to control the alarm at a dark place, does not
need to open the lid or cover to see the switch inside, does not need
to take the device out from a bag.

   A sensor to detect vibrations is built in the device, and
the device monitors the signal from the sensor always or during the
device is making sounds.  The signal that device detected is compared
with the pattern that has been registered in advance and if both data
are similar, or the signal is big enough to go over a predefined
threshold, the device stops or reduces the sound.

   The application of this system is not limited to mobile
device or alarm, but can be applied to televisions also to mute the
sound volume without using a remote controller.
