Abstract

This article describes a method for realizing an intelligent communication device maintaining compatibility without using embedded microcontroller. Instead of a embedded microcontroller the main processor of PC is used for realizing intellectual functions. In order to maintain the compatibility with the conventional device, the special ports is added for controlling from a main processor besides compatible ports.

Embedded Microprocessor

   This article describes a method for realizing an
intelligent communication device maintaining compatibility without
using embedded microcontroller.  Instead of a embedded
microcontroller the main processor of PC is used for realizing
intellectual functions.  In order to maintain the compatibility with
the conventional device, the special ports is added for controlling
from a main processor besides compatible ports.

   The conventional Method is described.  Many of intelligent
communication devices, such as a modem, are using the embedded
microcontroller for complicated processing.  However, use of
embedded microcontroller is becoming difficult by the
miniaturization of the latest device.  Furthermore, in order to
process a lot of data, it is not rare to also need parts, such as
ROM and RAM.

   The flow of processing of the general communication device
using the embedded microcontroller is shown in Fig.1.

   (a) Transmitting data received through the compatible port
is (b) processed by the embedded microcontroller, and is (c) sent to
a communication interface.  Reception is the opposite flow.
Compatibility is maintained by protecting the command system and a
data format of a compatible port.  Therefore, an embedded
microcontroller is needed for the purpose, such as the error
compensation, data conversion and framing of transmitting data.
