Home Control of Appliances Using PC EMF Noise

Wireless control of home appliances through EMF

The solution outlined is an RF solution that has no
incremental hardware cost to a PC for an RF controller.

It is well known in the computer community that systems
give off EMF.  Tempest systems are specifically designed so as not to
give off this radiation, but Tempest designs are very expensive.  It
has recently been shown that it is possible to deliberately change
data shown on a CRT screen in such a way as to
  1.  Be invisible to the user of the PC.
  2.  Radiate specific information that is available to the PC
      on a specific frequency.

One particular demonstration showed it is possible to play
a tune on a hand held radio up to 200 yards away.

transmission can be done via the video card, without the monitor on,
although the transmission strength is much reduced.

It is also interesting to note that for the large majority
of the X-10 protocol, transmission is one way -- that is, devices do
not respond as to whether or not they have "caught" the message and
will respond to it.

These things fit together quite well, to allow receiver
to be integrated into devices which need to be controlled by a
computer.  Each receiver would be configured to listen on a set
frequency for a particular pattern that describes them, along with a
command.  Because there is no feedback, a s...
