Physical Pop-up Menus

Disclosed is a method of design to apply the computer GUI
(graphical user interface) concept of a "pop-up menu" to physical
devices and appliances.

PPUMs (physical pop-up menus) can be accessed by using a
pointer type device (ie. remote controller, laser pointer), a voice
command recognition system, or by manual controls (ie. push button,
touch screens).  The Figure shows how a microwave could incorporate a
PPUM.  When activated, the PPUM can be moved by motor to hide/show
itself from the appliance.  Once revealed, the PPUM control area
allows users to make functional choices or change settings to an
appliance and, at the same time, the PPUM control area gives visual
feedback as to the changes made.  Because the PPUM exist in real 3D
space, the PPUM will pivot and/or rotate to receive optimal signal
reception from the user.
