Abstract

The availability is important for the 3.5" Desktop HDD but also reducing the power by entering the power save mode has the advantage for the green PC. Entering the power save mode is well analyzed and there is ABLE algorithm proposed and implemented in the mobile environment. This invention introduces the prediction method for returning from the power save mode or not entering ABLE by monitoring the system operation.

Operation Prediction Method in HDD Power Save Mode

   The availability is important for the 3.5" Desktop HDD but
also reducing the power by entering the power save mode has the
advantage for the green PC.  Entering the power save mode is well
analyzed and there is ABLE algorithm proposed and implemented in the
mobile environment.  This invention introduces the prediction method
for returning from the power save mode or not entering ABLE by
monitoring the system operation.

   When HDD is powered up, the HDD device driver send the real
time clock data to HDD.  HDD starts the internal clock.  By taking
the statistical access pattern data for 24 hours or weekly, HDD
predicts the command access possibility pattern from the system with
the time stamp for the operator or the system accessing the HDD.  If
the accessing possibility is high even there is no access now, the
criteria not to enter the ABLE mode or return from the power save
mode will be reduced with the command access ratio, like the duration
change of no command issued from the host during 10 sec to 1 min to
allow not to go the ABLE mode easily or return from the power save
mode easily.  If the access possibility pattern is low, then the
command access criteria stays with short.

   This system access pattern monitoring can be implemented
at the system side application also.  The background application
monitors the HDD access ratio with time stamp.  This monitor program
