Abstract

Disclosed herein is a cell structure with integrated polarizing layer and blasted top-glass surface, which purpose is improving light efficiency and widening viewing cone of display. The integrated polarizing layer, which is embedded internal cell, enables rubbing free by stretching PVA or protection layer. The blasted glass surface (like frosted glass treatment) can scatter or diffuse light and function as widening viewing cone. The fineness of blast or abrasion will be set depending on pixel pitch or front-of-screen (FOS) design. The integrated polarizing layer also has merits such as sticking free, no need for surface cleaning.

   Disclosed herein is a cell structure with integrated
polarizing layer and blasted top-glass surface,  which purpose is
improving light efficiency and widening viewing cone of display.  The
integrated polarizing layer, which is embedded internal cell, enables
rubbing free by stretching PVA or protection layer.  The blasted
glass surface (like frosted glass treatment) can scatter or diffuse
light and function as widening viewing cone.  The fineness of blast
or abrasion will be set depending on pixel pitch or front-of-screen
(FOS) design.  The integrated polarizing layer also has merits such
as sticking free, no need for surface cleaning.

   In conventional twisted nematic (TN) cell structure, liquid
crystal is sandwiched by external polarizers.  The surface of
polarizer is easily damaged or scratched by handling.  Fig. 1 shows a
new cell structure with frosted glass surface and integrated
polarizing layer.  As shown in Fig. 1, the cell is configured of top
glass (1) with blasted surface (2), surrounding seal (3), integrated
polarizing layer (4), bottom glass (5), external polarizer (6),
liquid crystal (7), and alignment layer (8).  The external polarizer
can be replaced by internal polarizer mentioned above.  In Fig. 1,
integrated polarizing layer functions as polarizer and alignment
layer, which can be fabricated by stretching the protection layer
(normally PVA: polyvinyl alcohol).  The stretching direction is
coincident with the rubbing direction.  The frosted glass treatment
or blasted surface enables light diffusing and effective to widening
viewing cone for normal TN cell.  Fig. 2 shows structure of the top
