Express Terminal Emulation

   Mobile data communication is one of the most important
new research fields, particularly the integration of portable
computers systems into the enterprise networks by wireless
communications technology.  The possibility to access and process
information any time and everywhere opens up.

   1.1 Introduction

   The application fields for the mobile data communication
are various.  Application fields are everywhere there where people
have to move freely at the handling of their tasks and would like to
dispose about most different information nevertheless currently and
flexibly.

   Portable computers (laptop computers, notebooks) are used
since long time for field service personnel.  Connecting these
mobile computers over radio to the existing central applications by
means of terminal emulation programmes increases further the
efficiency and flexibility of the field service at the customer
site.  Sales and service turnaround times can be shortened,
improving the quality of service.

   The further development of the terrestrial networks will
influence the mobile communication and its  increasing acceptance
with the users fundamentally.  A number of problems are linked to
the concept of "mobile data communication".  Some of these are:
  - Energy supply     in addition to the energy requirement
                      of the mobile computer, the radio equipment
                      needs to be covered too.
  - Transmission rate the transmission bandwidth of data radio
                      communication  services remains still far
                      behind stationary networks.
  - Costs             the transmitting costs in mobile
                      communications are a multitude of those
                      typically arising in stationary networks.
  - Complexity        in a dynamic architecture logical
                      connections must be mapped to various
                      physical structures.
  - Reliability       in general the radio frequency channel is
                      more unreliable than a fixed network
                      connection.
  etc.

   Existing terminal emulations transmit complete display
contents as soon as the user triggers an action by pressing a
function key on the host.  To compensate for this disadvantage and
address some of the problems of the mobile radio communications
networks already described (such as speed, costs, safety), an
optimized variant of the 3270/5250 terminal emulation was developed
in the context of the ARTour communications platform.  By the special
procedure which is used with the Express emulator the date volume is
reduced to 1/10 to 1/20, which affects in the noticeably shorter
answer time...
