Three-Functional-State Status Over One Wire

   Problem Description

   Most of telecommunication products are made of network
adapter slots and processor slots.  At any time a processor needs to
know if an adapter is either "non-plugged-in", "plugged-in but not
operational" or "plugged-in and operational".

   On today's designs these three different states are coded
onto two bits on each network adapter card and provided to the
processor card on two wires through a backplane.

   The invention describes a reverse implementation.  The
three-state status of each network adapter is decoded onto the
processor card from a single wire driven by each adapter.

   Advantage of the Invention
  o  the number of wires between the processor card and all the
     network adapter cards is divided by two which reduces the
     complexity of the backplane and therefore its cost
  o  the number of pins of both the processor card and the
     network adapter card is reduced.  Therefore a smaller
     connector can be used and the cost is reduced
