Stable Head Loading Method

   This article describes the actuator loading method from
RAMP which will minimize the influence of the tolerance of
mechanical parts even in a very small HDD drive in which mechanical
tolerance is strictly required.

   This method will stabilize both unnecessary VCM current on
the RAMP and unstable actuator loading due to mechanical tolerance.

   In the Hard Disk Drive which has Load Unload system, the
sequence for loading actuator from the RAMP is as follows;
  1.  Starting stage: Actuator stay around flat area between
      (1) and (2).
  2.  Pushing Outer: Push actuator toward outer (A) for
      calibration.
  3.  Pushing Inner(Kick to ID) : Move actuator by exciting
      constant VCM current toward inner direction. (B)
  4.  Controlled actuator loading stage: The actuator is
      controlled to the DISK by monitoring Back EMF voltage of
      the VCM coil. (C)
  5.  Seeking first cylinder: Loading ends, and seeking toward
      the first target cylinder.

   During above stage- 1, the actuator is kept pushing toward
outer direction (toward Outer Crash Stop), its position is located
flat area at the RAMP.

   In this method, shown in Figure 1, the actuator position
is aligned to (2) position(starting point of loading with kicking
toward inner) for each drive by having the stage of pushing actuator
toward inner direction  between the above stage number 2 and 3 ((A')
stage at the Figure 2).
