An Operation Method for a Hard Disk Drive with Head Load/Unload Mechanism
in Excessive Humidity Atmosphere

   Disclosed is an operation method for a Hard Disk Drive
(HDD) with head load/unload mechanism in excessive humidity atmos
phere in order to protect a head from corrosion damage.

   The excessive humidity operation often causes a
micro-condensation between the head and the disk.  And it corrodes
the h ad elements by reacting to impure out-gases.  At last, read and
write performances are degraded.

   It is possible to avoid loading the head on the disk at
the time of excessive humidity by placing a humidity sensor as a
real time monitor inside the drive enclosure.  Then the HDD can try
to recover the humidity by taking a longer warming- p time when
rotating a spindle and ventilating the air.

   That is,
  1.  Check the humidity inside HDD using the sensor before head
      loading.
  2.  If over the maximum operating value, stop loading the head.
  3.  Take a longer warming-up time rotating the spindle motor.
  4.  If within the operating value, start loading the head.  If
      still over the maximum operating value, abort the operation.

   The following Fig. 1 is an example circuit using a humidity
sensor that is resistance type.  A capacitance type is also
available.  And the humidity is calculated from the value of an
Analog Digital Converter in consideration of non-linearity of the
sensor output.
