Disclosed is a method for a wireless local area network (WLAN) environment-specific performance optimization. Benefits include improved performance and improved useability.

Background

              Many uncontrollable factors, such as noise, walls, and windows, affect the performance (throughput, range and power consumption) of a wireless network interconnect card (NIC). These factors result in performance differences in different locations, such as airports, cafes, and homes. Several WLAN driver and firmware parameters can be adjusted to improve performance. Unfortunately, adjusting these parameters is not easily performed by the end user.

              To improve the performance of a WLAN device, the user conventionally must change each of the driver and firmware parameters. The problem, however, is that the meaning of these parameters is not known to the typical user today and requires information above and beyond what a typical user should be expected to know.

General description

              The disclosed method is an interface that enables the end user to optimize WLAN settings.

When an operating location is selected, the aggregated parameters are tuned to provide an optimized experience in the selected location, overriding the more generic settings that are not optimized.

Detailed description

              The disclosed method is an interface that enables the end user to optimize wireless performance settings (see Figure 2). Driver and firmware parameters are aggregated into location-specific settings enabling performance optimizations for each location. Some locations that can benefit from performance optimizations include:

•             Cafés

•             Airports

•             Homes

•             Line-of-sight

•             Peep-to-peer

              For each location choice, changing the parameters correspondingly enhances the performance in that location. These location choices are exposed to the user through the WLAN-user interface. Selecting a location choice optimizes the WLAN devices performance for that specific location without the user having to know how to change each of the underlying aggregated driver and firmware parameters.

              An analogous example is a professional vs. amateur photographer. A professional knows how to adjust a camera’s aperture and shutter speed for each type photo setting. A typical user does not understand these settings but does desire good pictures.
