OZONE DESTRUCTION SYSTEM

ABSTRACT

This invention disclosure concerns a method and process of destroying Ozone contained in gas streams consisting primarily of Ozone in air or Ozone in Oxygen.  The process involves drawing the gas stream containing the Ozone through a prefilter, then through a heat exchanger, then into a catalyst bed, then through a post filter, then into the inlet side of a high flow capacity suction device, and then exhausting the deozonated gas stream into a suitable vent line and then into the ambient atmosphere.

BACKGROUND:

Ozone is a useful allotropic form of Oxygen that is also a particularly effective sterilizing and disinfecting agent.  There are also many well known food related and medical sterilization applications, as well as water purification applications, that involve the use of Ozone as a primary aid in related sterilization or purification processes.  Ozone is also used in combination with air or in pure Oxygen because it can be generated quite easily within these gases and used in these gas streams without the need for additional steps to separate or purify the Ozone before its final use.  However, in some applications, not all of the generated Ozone is consumed or converted back into Oxygen during a particular use process.  And, it is not good practice to vent large quantities of spent gas streams, containing relatively high concentrations of Ozone, into the ambient atmosphere since Ozone (in relatively low concentrations) is harmful to all biological organisms.  Therefore, means of destroying Ozone in high volume spent gas treatment streams is a necessity.  Therefore, those skilled in the art will recognize a need for a useful system that has been designed to efficiently deal with this problem. 

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION:

This invention disclosure concerns a method and process of destroying Ozone contained in gas streams consisting primarily of Ozone in air or Ozone in Oxygen.  The process involves drawing the gas stream containing the Ozone through a prefilter, then through a heat exchanger, then into a catalyst bed, then through a post filter, then into the inlet side of a high flow capacity suction device, and then exhausting the deozonated gas stream into a suitable vent line and then into the ambient atmosphere. This system is depicted schematically in Figure 1 which succinctly illustrates the layout and operation of all of the major components.
