A method and system for protecting mobile computers from theft using location based services.

Currently, mobile devices such as laptop computers are typically secured using a cable lock attached to a stationary item such as a desk. These are inconvenient as users are required to carry this cable lock with the computer. Further, in many cases the cable locks are not very reliable as the cable can be easily cut. The proposed solution will provide a flexible means for a user to protect a mobile device such as a laptop computer.

The main idea of this disclosure is a software based method of protecting mobile devices such as laptop computers from theft using a GPS navigational system or a Wi-Fi network. A self-powered GPS receiver or Wi-Fi network interface built into the computer will be used to lock the position of the computer. When the computer moves away from its locked position, the software will detect this event, sound an audible alarm and notify a monitoring station.

The solution comprises a "Soft-Lock" software program for locking the computer's position, a GPS receiver, optionally Wi-Fi network interface and optionally a speech synthesis engine such as ViaVoice.

The "Soft-Lock" program will provide the user with an interface to lock the position of the computer, set the desired range of movement of the computer before an alarm is raised, and permit configurations of notifications. Users can enable and disable this program. When the software lock is enabled,...
