Discussion of technical problem addressed by the invention.

The invention developed from exploring surgical tabletops and their differences, for a surgical navigation project.

The first problem is that in order for the navigation technology to function effectively, it is understood that the patient must be spaced a considerable distance from the metallic tabletop (up to 15cm). This is because metal components can interfere with the accuracy of the system.

This opens a market for a customized mattress thicker than the regular 5-6cm products

The second problem is that navigation surgery will need to occur on general and orthopaedic tables of all shapes and sizes worldwide. Different sizes have been noted, particularly in length (due to global patient size variation) and also pivot positions through the tables.

This opens a market for one mattress to suit all, a modular mattress that can be quickly attached and adjusted to table size for use with navigated surgery.

Figure 2 shows a sample batch of tabletops, to provide justification for invention.

Discussion of the solution

The invention provides an efficient means to attach and adjust a mattress to any surgical table size and space the patient sufficiently for successful navigation surgery.

The mattress is broken up into detachable sections which simplify handling for one person.

The head/body section would be placed to the top of the surgical table and secured with ‘Velcro’ or equivalent straps. The leg sections would then be added – they fit snugly with the female interface of the head/body section but are not permanently connected. They can slide axially to fit the length of table used and secured with ‘Velcro’ or equivalent straps. This allows for quick assembly and removal (see fig.3)
