Network management applications are provided statistical data from the managed devices according to the specific needs of the various management systems without mutual interference. Various sets of data from various collections of devices are provided to different management applications in a device independent ways through a CIM collection mechanism. As an example it is described how statistical data from IBM Enterprise Storage Servers* and IBM TotalStorage DS Systems* are provided to a CIM based management application.

A program is disclosed that is part of the actual CIM ObjectManager for IBM Enterprise Storage Server* and IBM TotalStorage DS 6000 and DS 8000. It handles the different vendor specific communication protocols for getting statistical data from IBM Enterprise Storage Servers* and IBM TotalStorage DS Systems* (further known as DiskSystem) and provides it via vendor neutral protocol. The program scans in a defined timeframe for a huge mount of statistical data, converts, caches and provide this as objects of the Common Information Model (CIM) in the specified timeframe. The timeframe can be defined for each management application itself by subscribing for a data collection.
In a first step each management application has to connect to the CIM Object Manager of the DiskSystems. The CIM Object Manager provides a subscription mechanism for each DiskSystem by a service instance of the class IBMTSESS_PerformanceStatisticsService. Each management application has to subscribe and unsubscribe for the data collection by using the specified methods "Register" and "Deregister". This starts the collection of statistics data.
The service instance verifies all registrations and change the parameters of data collection and caching mechanism for each managed DiskSystem . All registrations will be combined to one single data collection for each DiskSys...
