The basic idea of this invention is to use an adsorbent that can tolerate a relatively high moisture content and a valve (or other pressure reducing device) between the moisture adsorbent bed and the hydrogen storage device such that during charge step, during which moisture in the hydrogen from the battery is picked up by the adsorbent, the pressure in the adsorbent bed is higher than in the hydrogen storage device, and during discharge step, when hydrogen comes from the hydrogen storage device passes the adsorbent to remove the adsorbed moisture, the pressure in the hydrogen storage device is greater than that in the adsorbent bed. As a consequence, the volume of the gas flowing from the hydrogen battery and into the adsorbent bed is smaller than that coming out of the adsorbent bed and to the hydrogen battery. This enables the adsorbent to work repeatedly without significant loss of adsorption capacity.
