Method for a disk fragmentation application impact analyzer

Disclosed is a method for a disk fragmentation application impact analyzer (DFAIA). Benefits include improved functionality and improved performance.

Background

Conventionally, nothing is done to monitor fragmentation or the impact upon applications residing within file systems. As a result, performance penalties can occur due to fragmentation.

Description

The disclosed method is a software program that analyzes the current level of disk fragmentation within a file system. The method reports the impact on disk latency for read/write disk requests and its impact on a running application. After defragmentation, the method measures the overall application performance gain (see Figure 1).

Advantages

The disclosed method provides advantages, including:

•             Improved functionality due to providing a file system fragmentation and latency reporting/measurement tool

•             Improved performance due to faster application execution because of reduced latency
