This device provides a simple, safe and low cost solution to the problem of distinguishing the transmit and receive channels of a duplex fiber optic cable. This is achieved by plugging the cable into the device and observing which indicator is illuminated.

Disclosed is a device for distinguishing between the transmit and receive channels of a duplex fiber optic cable, in a safe and low cost way. It is both simple and quick to use, and easily portable.

    In a fiber channel cable consisting of two channels (duplex cable), it is essential to be able to distinguish between the transmit and receive channels. With a single link between device ports, it is normally acceptable to rely on the crossover in the cable being correct, but with a multi-link connection (such as happens with patch panels and fiber trunks), or in the case of terminators where the connector is in two separate parts, the number of crossovers can vary and hence channels can be wrongly connected. This will result in the circuit not being made, and time having to be spent in fault diagnosis.

    With visible light (such as is used with typical short-wave optics) it is possible to observe the transmit channel with the naked eye, but direct observation can be dangerous and cause damage to the eye, so should be avoided. Such observation is not possible with long-wave optics, as the wavelength is beyond the visible spectrum. In addition, longwave optics are usually laser based and have a higher output, and hence are potentially more dangerous.
