              Conventionally, block-guard generation and verification logic is integrated into direct memory access (DMA) processing modules.

General description

              The disclosed method is a stand-alone data integrity module that enables block-guard generation and verification to be performed in any data path. As a result, any input/output (I/O) processor can provide extensive data protection.

Detailed description

              The disclosed method is a data integrity module (DIM) that has two data path interfaces, a master and a target for moving data. The DIM generates write requests on the master and accepts write transactions on the target interface. Each target request must be accompanied by a block-guard enable bit and a context pointer. Based on the context, the DIM performs an appropriate data integrity function (see Figure 1).
