Background

              Conventionally, a 32-bit architecture serial bus supports a data at the rate of ~128 Gigabits/second. If the complexity of algorithms in RAID calculations increases, the performance gains that can be achieved with a single-core processor are limited.

General description

              The disclosed method uses IXP network processors in RAID applications. Data is encrypted/decrypted and stored in RAID drives. If one or more hard disks are removed, data cannot be retrieved until the encryption/decryption algorithm is executed on the input/output (I/O) processor.

              Encryption/decryption modules are executed by a dedicated microengine (ME) that does not hinder the processing of packets and data.
