Abstract

There is currently no efficient way of interpreting and integrating the plethora of standards, guidelines, and requirements for our component-based work activities. The process to resolve conflicts and to identify reuse opportunities is often left to group dynamics and the knowledge of whoever is completing the process for a given release. Our idea addresses this problem by data mining a collection of information, prioritizing decision points, and providing mapping alternatives.

Currently, the process of researching and synthesizing data from a wide variety of sources is tedious and error-prone. There is no efficient way of presenting, analyzing, or integrating the new, existing, and sometimes conflicting standards, guidelines, and requirements for our component development, test case development, or information development activities. The process to resolve conflicts or intersections, and to identify reuse opportunities, is often at the mercy of group dynamics, an individual's view of the data, and the knowledge of whoever is completing the process for a given release. The current approach is time consuming, error-prone, and subject to personal preferences and biases.

Let's consider an example from the Information Development environment. The UCD Workbench has a wizard that leads you through a series of questions about your project and outputs a series of processes that can be followed. It merely suggests ways in which your team can operate to provide more usable products. Also, the Task Modeler is another tool with which you can manually input data and information about your project, and then it automates the output of graphs, topic hierarchies (in a DITAMAP file), and a set of starting source files, based on that information.
