Abstract

This invention may be incorporated into any UMTS mobile user equipment (UE). The nature of the invention is embedded software for mobile devices. If the NAS requests that the AS/RRC establishes a signalling connection while the RRC is in the process of releasing the RRC connection, confusion may arise since this eventuality is not mentioned in the 3GPP RRC specification. The UTRAN will be expecting an RRC CONNECTION RELEASE COMPLETE, but if the RRC immediately starts the RRC connection establishment procedure, it will send an RRC CONNECTION REQUEST to the UTRAN. The invention specifies that if the NAS requests establishment of a signalling connection whilst RRC Connection release is in progress (i.e. RRC CONNECTION RELEASE has been received, but RRC CONNECTION RELEASE COMPLETE has not been sent.), then the request will be saved until after the RRC Connection release procedure has completed. Once the RRC Connection Release procedure has completed, then the RRC will start the Connection Establishment procedure (Although this need not be done if the NAS has in the meantime sent in a request to release the connection.). Alternative solutions to potential problems would be to either abort the Connection Release procedure, or to fail the re-establishment and return an error code to the NAS. This invention has the advantage that both the NAS and the UTRAN need no extra software to deal with the situation. Additionally, no new UTRAN/UE messaging sequences are involved.

ESTABLISHING REQUEST DURING CONNECTION RELEASE

Disclosed Anonymously
