Abstract

In the deregulated environment of the telecommunication market it is important for a subscriber to have the opportunity to get informed about the tariff which will be applied for an intended call without making the call itself. Until now there has been only the possibility to get information about the charging tariffs of on active call. A solution is based on the assumption that in the telephone network (e.g. PSTN, ISDN) there is a server, which has stored the information about the valid applied charging rates of every carrier in the country of interest, for preferably any destination. The subscriber dials a specific access code followed by the destination number that is going to be called. Then the subscriber is informed, e.g. via an announcement or a display at his terminal, about the tariffs of the different carriers/networks for the call he wants to make. The local switch (cf. Fig. 1) forwards the query for the selected destination to the abovementioned server via TCAP (Transaction Capabilities Application Part). The server finds out the required information in its database and sends it to the subscriber by his local exchange. The presentation of the information about charging tariffs can be realized via an acoustic announcement or via a visual presentation on a display. The query can be set also by means of web-based SCI (Subscriber Network Interface), and it can be applied also for IP (Internet Protocol) subscribers. As a general example, the subscriber dials (xx: access code for charging tariff Request; dest: the destination the subscriber wants to call): *xx*dest#
