Abstract

If a user travels in an unfamiliar rural area, he or she has no warning when leaving a coverage area and no information as to when they will return into a coverage area. This device will become location aware in the future via technologies such as GPS, EOTD, and TDOA. Coverage map databases can be downloaded to the device. By using the device’s current location, direction, speed, and signal strength, and comparing them to the coverage map, the device can estimate when it will be exiting the coverage area. The device can warn the user, and so the user can then perform any functions prior to leaving the coverage area. If the device is being used as a navigation system, it could preload any navigation data it may require when out of coverage. Once the device leaves coverage area, it can use the current location, direction and speed, and compare them to the coverage map to provide the user an estimate of when the device will return to the coverage area.
