Pro-active Service Alerts Via Automated Correlation of System Errors Based On Call Home Data

Typically, large amounts of data can be sent to a central location for storage in the event of a system error. This data can be used to help diagnose the cause of the error. Currently, there does not exist a way to discover similarities between multiple occurrences of the same error in a given machine, or across multiple machines. The same problems are often solved multiple times by many different people. The solution described herein shows a method for correlating common errors that occur in a single machine, or across multiple machines.

This invention takes data that is sent to a central repository during a system error and correlates it with existing data captured during previous system errors for the given machine, or across multiple machines of the same type. This methodology filters out multiple occurrences of temporary errors by confirming that a service action was performed on at least one previous occurrence of the system error. Provided that all of these conditions are met, a notification is sent to a support center appropriate for the type/model of the machine(s) listing all matching serial numbers and locations.
