Abstract

The article described takes the place of a Blow Out Preventer (BOP) when conducting intervention work on subsea oil and gas wells. The ‘Dummy Light Blow Out Preventer’ (DLBOP) interfaces with a Horizontal Subsea Tree or Subsea Wellhead to allow the use of standard landing strings, tools and interfacing mechanisms, without the need to run a Marine BOP. The invention has particular application in subsea wireline work and also allows lightweight tie-back riser strings to be run without the need for specially made BOP equipment. The DLBOP can remove the need to run the heavy BOP, thereby reducing the risk of a heavy dropped object and saving intervention vessel time. The latter being a major economic consideration, particularly in deeper waters. The invention as described is a cost effective substitute for the large and complex BOP stack during light intervention work, whilst still providing substantial structural support, operational flexibility and alternative means of pressure containment.

Description

When access to the bore of a subsea oil or gas well is required, it is standard practice to connect a Blow Out Preventer (BOP) and riser system from a Semi Submersible Drilling Rig.  In this way standardized landing strings and tools can be used to access the components in the bore of the Subsea Tree, Wellhead or Well itself. The BOP systems which are typically run can weigh up to 300 tons and the running operation represents a time-consuming, expensive and risky aspect of subsea well work. A number of subsea intervention or interface operations however do not require the full size BOP to be run and the present invention provides a means essential for containing, supporting, sealing and otherwise interfacing as required, with tools which could otherwise only be run via a standard BOP. Using the DLBOP allows such field proven tools to be used without the need for other specialised subsea BOP equipment and without compromising safety.

The DLBOP interfaces with a Horizontal Subsea Tree or Wellhead to allow the use of standard landing strings and tools without the need to run a Marine BOP.
