1:                 Explain the problems, issues or needs which led to the invention, and explain how     others have addressed these problems, issues or needs.

                    Multi-media players, radios and the like provide entertainment for millions.  Unfortunately in the case of portable devices like PCs or automotive based devices they can run down the batteries.  In the case of PCs, draining the battery until the system crashes.  In automobiles this usage often has drained the battery to a level less than necessary to restart the vehicle.  With the increase usage of accessories such as multi-media players (DVDs, CD, radios, etc.) the most common causes due to human error such as leaving the radio on, the lights on, or more currently the entertainment center.  Cell phones, portable phones, etc., often warn the user of impending battery failure, but don’t typically perform a soft, protected shutdown of the system.  They usually just run out of power and the call is terminated.  This is intended to preserve enough system power to allow an engine re-start and avoid being stranded or a soft shutdown of a PC preserving data.
