Abstract

A Power-Line Communications (PLC) device is described. The invented device will help increase communication speed between two PLC devices that are located close to one another. Invention Disclosure:

This invention tries to address the following issue:  Consider a Home PLC network.  Consider two devices in the living room (a DTV and a DVR) that happen to be physically located next to each other, and are both connected to the power socket (and hence to the Home PLC network).  Even though these two devices are located physically close to one another and are connected to the same wall outlet via a wall-mounted power strip, the PLC data communication between these two devices can suffer due to noise interference from other devices on the home powerline network e.g. refrigerators, and isolating the sources or causes of such interference may not be feasible for the typical user.  In certain cases, interference may be caused by PLC devices or noisy non-PLC devices connected to the neighbor’s powerline, making a solution even more challenging.  In addition, these two PLC devices (DTV and DVR) must share the total available bandwidth on the home PLC network with other PLC transmitting devices throughout the home (and/or the neighbor’s home) even though these two devices may be communicating mostly with each other.  Both of these are ironic since the DTV and DVR are “so close to one another.”

In the described invention, the above problems are solved as followed:   The wall-mounted power-strip between the DTV, DVR, and the wall socket is modified to (a) create a local PLC network between devices connected to sockets on the power strip,    (b) attenuate interference from other parts of the home power-line onto this local PLC network, (c) optionally (but ideally) imple...
